FTB filing season statistics
Here are some filing season statistics we received from the FTB. The statistics reflect data as of May 3, 2008; all figures compare 2008 at this time to the same time last year. Of particular note is that personal income tax return filings are up by 4.3%, but business entity return filings are down by 6.1%. Refunds for both have totaled $6.5 billion, a 1.7% increase over last year. Paper continues to be the choice for payment by taxpayers; however, the volume of electronic deposits is 28.1% higher than last year.
The biggest day for deposits was on April 28, 2008, when the FTB deposited $2.9 billion.
Personal Income Tax (PIT) Returns — As of May 3, 2008, there were 13.1 million PIT returns filed, which is up 4.3% compared to last year. Last year, the FTB received 8.9 million e-filed returns, while this year they have received 9.7 million e-filed returns. Of all PIT returns filed, 74.0% have been e-filed, compared to 70.5% last year.
Business Entity (BE) Tax Returns — 574,916 BE tax returns have been filed, which is down 6.1% compared to last year. Of these, 126,481 BE returns were e-filed, compared to 17,387 last year. This is an increase of 627.4%.
Refunds (PIT & BE) — This year, there have been 8.2 million PIT and BE refunds issued, totaling $6.5 billion. Both PIT and BE direct deposit refunds (DDRs) are up 7.7% and 70.4%, respectively, over last year. The total volume of refunds issued this year is 1.7% higher than last year. The total dollar amount increased by 0.7% compared to last year.
Total Deposits (PIT, BE, Non-Tax, and Web Pay) — The total number of deposits into the state’s coffers is up by 5.1%, and the total dollar amount is up 4.1% compared to last year. Paper continues to be the choice for payment by taxpayers; however, the volume of electronic deposits is 28.1% higher than last year.
There have been 81,600 Web Pay payments, up 173% over last year, when 29,800 were received. The total Web Pay amount is $187.7 million, compared to last year’s $100.6 million, which is up 86%.
Phone Calls Received — The FTB’s Call Center received more than 110,000 calls the week of April 14, responding to just over 45,000 of those calls. On April 15 alone, the call center answered more than 15,500 calls from taxpayers and tax practitioners.
