FTB launches annual nonfiler program
The FTB began releasing their annual nonfilers letters on February 2, 2010, to more than 900,000 people who earned California income in 2008 but failed to file a state income tax return for that year.
Individuals contacted by the FTB have 30 days to file their state tax return or show why one is not due. If an individual fails to file a required return, the FTB will issue an assessment using income records to estimate the amount of state tax due. The assessment will include interest, fees, and penalties of up to 50%.
The FTB finds nonfilers by using more than 350 million income records they receive each year from third parties, such as the IRS, banks, employers, state departments, and other sources. In addition, the FTB uses occupational licenses and mortgage interest payment information to detect others who may also have a filing requirement.
