We have two questions regarding the state section on the 1099-NEC (boxes 5-7):
- In the event that there is no CA withholding to be reported in Box 5, do we still need to report the payer’s state number in Box 6 and state income in Box 7?
- What state number should be used in Box 6?
We appreciate any information you may be able to provide.

For federal purposes boxes 5-7 are on the form for convenience and not required to be completed. Since CA requires copies of Form 1099-NEC it would be a good idea to include the payer’s state identification number and state income even though there was no CA withholding. The state identification number is their entity number assigned by the Secretary of State.
