CA non-profit question

CA non-profit 501(c)(3) hasn't filed returns since 2010 - they have been "inactive".  The IRS pulled the non-profit status several years ago an clients did not realized this.  Attorneys are recommending that the entity file "for-profit" returns, and then they will appeal to the FTB to not pay the $800 for the past several years.  I don't think that will work - will it?  Any way to get around this?

If they have been inactive for more than 48 months, the SOS will propose suspending them and they will get a letter from SOS giving them time to revive with the FTB. See AB 557 from 2015.

They actually want to shut down, but need to get in compliance first.  Can they get out of the $800 per year?

I'm not sure. You could contact the FTB's nonprofit group.
