IRS to send out millions of balance due notices starting this month

The IRS announced recently that it will resume its collection activities. During the COVID-19 emergency declaration, on March 25, 2020, the IRS suspended some compliance actions and later expanded this relief in February 2022. These actions included the suspension of some collection notices, such as lien and levy notices.

Beginning in May 2023, the IRS will begin sending these notices to taxpayers again. Before taxpayers receive any collection notices, however, they will first receive a CP-14 balance due notice. We have heard reports that the IRS is anticipating sending out between five million and eight million CP-14s by the end of May. Be prepared for calls from clients who have outstanding balances due.
