Taxpayer Advocate Service not accepting Economic Impact Payment–only cases

The IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) stated it will not accept cases related only to EIP issues, because according to the memo TAS assistance will not expedite or improve current EIP processing. (TAS Memo, Interim Guidance – Economic Impact Payments and TAS Case Acceptance (May 14, 2020))

They will continue to work with taxpayer problems involving return processing which may delay refunds and EIPs. Once problems are resolved, the EIPs may be systematically released.

The TAS handles cases that include, however are not limited to, the following:

  • Identity theft;
  • Duplicate returns; and
  • Return integrity verification issues (RIVO).
