Fraud Friday: A Florida father/daughter duo

A Florida father/daughter duo is in prison for defrauding the IRS out of millions in false tax refunds. They each filed several fraudulent returns starting in 2015, claiming refunds on their lottery winnings. They were both issued multiple refund payments, totaling $3.4 million, before the IRS realized they had never even won the lottery. According to a 2018 GAO report, the IRS estimated that it paid out $1.7 billion dollars in invalid refunds in 2016, but the IRS also estimated that it eventually caught about 84% of these fraudulent filings.
