Half a century of trusted tax education

In 1975, Spidell began with a simple mission: deliver accurate, practical tax education to professionals who needed it most. Fifty years later, we’re still here—stronger than ever—thanks to you. Join us in celebrating five decades of service, innovation, and community.

From 1975 to 2025

Let's rewind to the 1975 tax season—when bookkeeping was done on paper, calculators and typewriters ruled the desk, spreadsheets were brand new, and IRS forms were filled out by hand and dropped in the mail. It was a time before the Tax Reform Act of 1986, Black Monday in 1987, the Dot-Com crash of the late '90s, 9/11, the Great Recession, and the COVID-19 pandemic. So much has changed in the tax industry since then, but one thing remains constant: the essential need for accurate, timely tax updates.

Take a quick trip through the milestones and moments that shaped Spidell in this quick highlight video. Have a favorite Spidell moment? Share it in the comments and enjoy reminiscing with stories from other Spidell customers!

Honoring Robert Spidell: 1933 - 2025

It all started in 1975, when Bob and his wife Janet turned a vacant 7-Eleven in Anaheim into the birthplace of Spidell Publishing. From those humble beginnings, Bob became known as “Mr. California Tax,” leading a revolution in how tax professionals understood complex state laws.

Bob’s legacy includes:

Making complex tax law understandable. Through his California Taxletter®, forms books, tax guides, and client letters, Bob had a unique gift for making the most complicated aspects of California tax law accessible and clear.

Creating a vital tax education community. Spidell’s tax update seminars became the gold standard across the state, drawing thousands of tax professionals each fall to prepare for the new season and reconnect with colleagues.

Fighting for fairness in taxation. A tireless advocate, Bob frequently met with state agencies and lawmakers. Among his most notable accomplishments was helping stop the Franchise Tax Board from taxing nonresident military personnel.

What an amazing guy [Bob Spidell was] and I am so grateful to him. I was so fortunate to have met him and shake his hand at several tax updates and he always made me feel like he knew me and was ever interested in my practice and how they could serve me better. I will miss those opportunities in the future but will always remember those great moments."
