My client is working on his final settlement, it should be completed and signed by the end of the month, but in California the divorce is not finalized until 6 months later.  He is asking if the alimony will be deductible or not based on the new law.  I read one place that since it is a signed agreement then it is deductible but another place I read it has to be finalized.  Any guidance would be helpful.

We believe that if the order was filed and signed by a judge prior to 1/1/19, it will follow the old law because to start the waiting period the order has to be singed off by the judge.
