I have a client separated in 2020, can qualify for MFS not to their financial advantage had college costs. But each moved to a different state. Joint in Indiana, but separately to Michigan and Illinois.
In discussion with my software supplier, they recommended that I can file fed joint and them switch to MFS for the state return.
Can I do this? Do I need to provide an exception to having the status different between Fed and States.
I’m not sure what the rules are in Michigan and Illinois. In California you must generally use the same filing status on the CA return that you use on the federal return. You will have to check the filing instructions for the comparable state 1040 form for these states.
